Electricity Bill in Thailand

Methods to pay your Electricity Bill in Thailand

As you all are aware of the fact that Electricity Bill in Thailand is going to increase from 4 to 5 Baht per unit from Sep to Dec 2022 as per information by various News Channels. This rise is due to the increase of wholesale LNG prices Internationally. And this increase is imminent in all provinces of Thailand.

Thailand Electricity Distribution is divided into two main segments: -

  1. MEA (Metropolitan Electric Authority)
  2. PEA (Provincial Electric Authority)

MEA is responsible to distribute electricity to almost all parts of Bangkok Districts. As I am based in Bangkok therefore I will explain first part in detail that includes Structure of Bill, Meter Reading Date, Total Units Consumed, Due Date and Methods to Pay your Bill

PEA is the Provincial Electric Authority and each province has its own office, however there is a little difference between the Bill structure if compared with MEA.

Every month a representative from MEA comes and takes a reading of units consumed, record in his electric gadget and prints Electric Bill within no time.

There has never been a instance to correct Electricity Bill in the last so many years. However you can always double check the consumption of units on the Meter and with the Electric Bill received.

You are going to see some deductions like FT (Fuel Tax) and Unit Tariff Calculation based on your consumption and are very tricky to understand.

But now on the MEA website you can calculate and verify your Bill. The Link is as under: -

3. How and When to Pay your Bill?

Due to technology and advancement of online services, it is very easy to pay your Bills within no time and without any extra charge.

When I came in Thailand it has always been a headache to pay electric or water bill in time while standing in a queue in front of a grocery store like 7/11 or Tesco Lotus. And they usually charge minimum of 10 to 15 THB approximately.

Some of the typical ways to pay Bills are as under: -

  • Bank Channel: You can easily pay your Bills at an ATM or Bank counter. However they usually charge 10 THB and you may have to wait in a queue.
  • Convenience Stores: 7/11, Tesco, Tops and BIGC etc have all partnered with MEA to accept Bill payments with some charges on top.
  • MEA Smart Application: Now you can download MEA Smart Application on your Android or IOS Phone and can get notifications of upcoming bill due date and can pay your Electric Bills by registering your debit/card with MEA Application with a nominal fee.

  • Free Payment by Banking Application: So now you have come to know all of the channels above and how to pay your Electricity Bill, however I use only one method to pay my Bills and that is Payment by my Thai Bank Application and above all FREE OF CHARGE. Yes that's right. If you have a Bank Account with any Thai Bank then you can just pay your Bills within 02 minutes. They don't charge you a single Baht for paying your Electric Bill.

If you have MEA Application then you are always notified with the last date of payment. You can see Due Date in the structure of the Bill I have already covered in Part 1. I always put a reminder in my mobile phone about due payments.
