Incident Report: Tourists Sustain Injuries in Squid Ride Malfunction at International Silk Festival

Tenacle Gets Broken of Octopus Ride at Festival

Tourists got hurt when a big squid ride at the International Silk Festival had a malfunction, causing a part to break off and fall to the ground. The accident happened on December 1, during the last ride of the day. Three people were injured, but authorities quickly provided medical help and took them to the hospital.

On December 2, Prachuap Rakphat, the District Chief Officer of Khon Kaen, along with Anu Jeungsakul, the city’s Town Planning Officer, and other authorities inspected the site. They found that the part of the ride connected to the squid’s tentacle had broken, making the ride collapse and hurt the tourists. Thankfully, none of the injured tourists were severely harmed.

Prachuap shared that the incident occurred at 11:45 pm during the last round of the ride's operation. As the ride was moving, the squid tentacle broke and hit three female tourists nearby. All three injured people have been discharged from the hospital. Before the Silk Festival, safety inspections were done on all rides, including the squid ride, and it was found to be safe and insured.

However, after the incident, the squid ride is temporarily closed until a thorough investigation is done by the Office of the Town Planning and Urban Affairs of Khon Kaen Province to ensure its safety.

The ride’s supervisor, Jaturong, set up the squid ride on November 30, after using it at the Elephant Fair in Surin Province. He mentioned that there weren't many tourists on the ride when the incident happened. When the ride was about to stop, an unusual noise was heard, and the tentacle of the squid, which had three tourists on it, hit the ground. One injured person needed hospitalization due to a head injury. Jaturong plans to visit them in the hospital. He also mentioned that he had insurance for the ride, and after the incident, he found that the entire metal arm of the ride would need replacement for the safety of future tourists.

Thailandseekers.com wish and pray for early and speedy recovery of all effected by the incident.
